Lessons Learned of the Importance of Soil Testing

I recently had a bit of a wake-up call in my garden, and I want to share the valuable lessons I learned along the way. If you’re like me and struggling with yield or production, you might be making the same mistake I did. This is the story of how I came to realize the importance of soil testing and how Epic Gardening’s Soil Testing Kit became an essential tool for me.

Preparing for the Fall Growing Season

As we head into the fall season here in the South, it’s prime time for growing food. After enduring the brutal summer heat, fall brings a welcome opportunity to plant and harvest. But as I prepared for this new season, I knew there were a few things I needed to check—starting with the soil. After all, if you feed the soil, you feed the plants.

It had been two years since I last tested my soil—definitely too long. In the meantime, I had been using at-home tests to check on things, but I noticed they weren’t very reliable. That’s when I decided it was time for a full-blown scientific soil test, and I turned to Epic Gardening for help.

Using the Epic Gardening Soil Testing Kit

When I ordered the soil testing kit from Epic Gardening, it arrived within a week in a small, easy-to-handle box. Inside was everything I needed: an instruction card, a plastic baggie with a soil line, and all the return information. The process was straightforward. I took soil samples from four of my garden beds that were installed at different times, to get a comprehensive overview of my soil’s health.

I dug down about 4 to 6 inches, where the plant roots live, and took a scoop of soil from each bed. Mixed it all together, sifted out any debris like sticks and bugs, and then filled the baggie up to the soil line. After sealing the bag, I packed everything back into the box and dropped it in the mail. Simple, right?

The Results: What I Learned About My Soil

Soil Testing Results

About a week later, the results came in via email, and I was in for a few surprises. The test provided a detailed breakdown of various soil components, including pH levels, organic matter, and essential nutrients like phosphorus and potassium.

Here’s a quick overview of what I discovered:

  • pH Level: My soil pH was 7.1, slightly higher than the ideal range of 6.2 to 6.8. While not overly concerning, it’s something I need to monitor.
  • Organic Matter: I had a high level of organic matter at 10.43%. This is generally a good thing, especially in Florida’s sandy soil. However, it also contributed to some other issues.
  • Phosphorus: This was my biggest shock. My phosphorus level was 289, far above the optimal range of 42 to 68. I realized that the at-home tests had misled me, causing me to add way too much phosphorus over the past two years.

The Consequences of Over-Fertilizing

The excessive phosphorus is particularly concerning because it can harm both plants and the environment. High phosphorus levels can lead to plant stress and even contribute to water pollution—a big no-no in Florida, where protecting our waterways is crucial.

Realizing my mistake, I’ve decided to take a break from adding any amendments or fertilizers for the next year. I’ll focus on letting the soil recover naturally, and before I add anything new, I’ll do another soil test to ensure the levels have come down.
